Island of Montreal Electoral Profile

 The Island of Montreal electoral profile, electoral geography and organizational structure shows an Island divided into 16 cities, that is one City of Montreal, 19 boroughs and 15 reconstituted cities.

Montreal City Council

 A Montreal city council composed of 65 seats occupied first by the mayor of the City of Montreal who is also the mayor of the Ville-Marie borough. A city council composed of 18 borough mayors, 38 borough Councillors and 8 city Councillors. 

 Every four years in November, voters elect or re-elect a mayor, a Montreal city council and the mayors and city councils of each of the 15 other cities of the Island of Montreal.

City of Montreal

 When we refer to our Montreal electoral geography we first refer to the City of Montreal, a city located on the Island of Montreal and divided into 19 boroughs.

Boroughs of Montreal

 When we refer to the Montreal boroughs, we refer to the 19 boroughs of the City of Montreal and to each of their respective borough mayors and borough Councillors

 Each of the 19 Montreal boroughs have their own borough council, for a total of 38 borough Councillors who sit on each of their respective borough council and who offer direct public services to their borough population.

 Each borough is administered by a director who reports to his or her borough council and each borough receives an operating budget allocated by the Montreal City Council. 

 The city council is responsible for indexing taxes for residential and non-residential properties, while the borough councils are responsible for indexing taxes for the services offered in each of their respective borough. 

Island of Montreal

 When we refer to the electoral political division of the Island of Montreal, we refer to its 16 municipalities, that is the City of Montreal and 15 reconstituted cities.

 We also refer to a range of services provided by the Urban Agglomeration of Montreal, governed by the agglomeration council and headed by the mayor of the City of Montreal.

Cities of the Island of Montreal

 When we refer to Montreal other cities, we refer to 7 cities, 6 towns 1 ville and 1 village, for a total of 15 reconstituted cities located on the Island of Montreal.

Montreal Urban Agglomeration

 Fifteen reconstituted cities that chose not to remain incorporated in the City of Montreal and a complex organizational structure called the Urban Agglomeration of Montreal responsible for the political administration of the entire Island of Montreal.

 An Urban Agglomeration of Montreal and a total of 31 elected officials. 

  • The mayor of Montreal
  • 15 members of the Montreal city council
  • 14 mayors of the reconstituted Montreal cities, the City of Dorval and the small Island of Dorval counting for one city
  • One additional representative selected by the mayor of the City of Dollard-Des-Ormeaux because of its large size and population.

Agglomeration Council

 The Agglomeration Council of the Urban Agglomeration of Montreal has the power to adopt municipal by-laws, authorize expenses and impose taxes on the entire Island of Montreal.

Montreal Metropolitan Community

 When we refer to the Montreal Metropolitan Community (MMC) we refer to the 82 municipalities of the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal (CMM) and to its strategic functions that include planning, coordinating and financing the strategies related to the development of our metropolitan community.

Census Metropolitan Area

 When we refer to the Montreal Census Metropolitan Area (CMA), we refer to the City of Montreal and to the 91 adjacent municipalities of the Région Métropolitaine de Recensement de Montréal (RMR).

 A Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) defined by Statistics Canada and a national Canadian Census conducted every five years also by Statistics Canada.
